If Adium and Firefox can survive in the face of iChat and Safari, why not a mail client? Admittedly Adium and Firefox are free (anyone have examples of paid apps that are surviving against a Mac pack-in?) but the larger point is that a much larger percentage of Mac users are willing to go out of their way to try new software than Windows users. (At the very least, I'll give it my best shot ) If this hasn't been accomplished by the time I've jumped from Java to ObjC, I'll do it myself. What happens if someone comes along and writes an email program that kicks ass? I hate to bring memes into this, but, I feel I must: EPIC FAIL. I bet even Microsoft is amazed by with how badly RIM just owned themselves. I was expecting them to bring a much stronger iPhone competitor to the table. I've never seen anyone shoot themselves so ridiculously badly as RIM just did with the Storm. RIM is certainly making Apple's job easier right now. The list of reasons* to choose a BlackBerry over an iPhone is rapidly depleting. I think the larger problem is, nobody wants to compete in a market dominated by a bundled app made by Apple and an App made by Microsoft that most users stick with because they need the Exchange support. There are a small handful of other email apps out there, and none of them support IMAP, which means they're not even worth considering.
